Explain the digestive events that take place in the mouth,
stomach, and small intestine.
All three components of the gastrointestinal tract secrete
digestive enzymes that aid in digesting foods; all three are
important in the continuous movement of food through the
GI tract. Starting with the generation of a bolus of food in the
mouth, the swallow propels it into the esophagus. Thereafter,
peristalsis is utilized by the remainder of the GI tract to move
the digestive products from the esophagus to the stomach,
into the small intestine, and eventually into and through the
large intestine.
