How do the editors of your textbook define Central Asia?
What will be an ideal response?
Central Asia is difficult to define as to what should and not should not be included in the region. The five former Soviet states of Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan are unilaterally considered part of Central Asia. The textbook editors argue for the inclusion of Azerbaijan because it is culturally and economically tied to the region, and for the inclusion of Afghanistan as well due to its similar cultural and physical geography. The editors also view the western Chinese province of Tibet as well as Mongolia as part of Central Asia but cite that the continued immigration of Chinese into both regions will draw these areas more into the East Asia cultural framework.
