OD (organizational development) is a set of techniques for implementing planned change to make people and organizations more effective. OD focuses specifically on people in the change process. (Some scholars use the term "organizational development" for techniques designed to improve organizational effectiveness, and the term "change management" for techniques designed to improve people effectiveness—that is, techniques that will help people to adopt new mindsets, policies, practices, and behaviors to deliver organizational results.) Often OD is put into practice by a change agent, who is a consultant with a background in behavioral sciences who can be a catalyst in helping organizations deal with old problems in new ways.

OD can be used to address a variety of problems in organizations, including managing conflict, revitalizing an organization, and adapting to mergers and acquisitions.
