Graphic organizers can be extremely helpful for addressing comprehension difficulties.Picture walks are one type of graphic organizer.A traditional picture walk involves surveying the illustrations of a story, making predictions about the story, and confirming the predictions.It helps children form expectations about what might occur in the story.“Focusing children with ASD on pictures satisfies their tendency to learn visually and is more effective than simply talking or reading a summary of the book jacket” (Gately, 2008, p. 42).When there are no pictures available, using visual maps is an alternative.
Story maps are another type of graphic organizer. Stringfield, Luscre, and Gast (2011) found Story Maps to be an effective and efficient strategy for students with autism who have problems with planning and working memory.The maps provided a framed outline of basic story elements, which eliminated the need for students to hold each story element in memory while considering how they related to one another to respond to story questions (Stringfield et al., 2011).
