Briefly describe the two-step process used to refine bauxite ore.

What will be an ideal response?

Aluminum is refined using a two-step process. The first, the Bayer process, produces a very pure alumina (Al2O3). Alumina is an oxide of aluminum in crystal form. The second step reduces the alumina to a metallic aluminum, which is about 99 percent pure. This process is referred to as the Hall-Hroult process. It is named after the two men who developed the electrolytic method of aluminum production.
