Discuss the function of hair cells as sensory receptors, and identify two different locations and/or organs that utilize
these receptors What will be an ideal response?
Hair cells are mechanoreceptors that contain a single long kinocilium and numerous short
stereocilia. When the stereocilia are deformed in one direction, depolarization results, and
neurotransmitters are released which stimulate adjacent neurons; when they are deformed in
the other direction, hyperpolarization results. Hair cells are the main mechanoreceptors in the
utricle, saccule, the semicircular canals, and the organ of Corti.
