They were formerly used to treat obesity and to counteract overdoses of CNS depressant drugs. Today, however, they are essentially obsolete. Their use is limited in practice to attention-deficit disorder and episodes of excessive drowsiness and uncontrolled sleep attacks during the day (narcolepsy).
Examples of CNS stimulants used for attention-deficit disorder and narcolepsy are methylphenidate hydrochloride (Ritalin), amphetamine mixtures (Adderall), and methylphenidate (Concerta). Although caffeine is not often thought of as a drug, it is a CNS stimulant. Doxapram (Dopram), are used in the treatment of respiratory depression induced by drug overdose.
