Identify two or three issues faced by aging gay, lesbian, and bisexual seniors
What will be an ideal response?
Gay and lesbian seniors who have not come out or have not come to terms with their sexual orientation may feel depressed or alone as they continue to age. In addition, they may experience depression and isolation from the years of internalized homophobia (Altman, 2000; Gross, 2007). For some, hiding their sexual orientation when they are ready for a nursing home is their only choice.
Many issues confront aging gay and lesbian seniors. Studies have found that nursing home staff often report intolerant or condemning attitudes toward GLB residents (Cahill et al., 2000; Gross, 2007; Röndahl et al., 2004).
