James and Mary want to raise their child to have the greatest amount of future possibilities. As much as possible, they want their child to be able to shape his/her own future, including choosing clothing and hairstyles and a profession of his/her choice. Explain which of the following (sex, gender, gender identity, gender roles) James and Mary can leave open for their child, how they can leave a characteristic for the child to decide, and why these characteristics can or cannot be left for the child to decide.

What will be an ideal response?

James and Mary will not be able to leave the sex of their child open because this was determined prenatally by the sex chromosomes during fertilization of the ovum. Sex is biologically based. James and Mary can leave the gender of their child open because this is determined by the child's behavior. If James and Mary give their child a nongendered name, dress the child in a nongendered way, and provide the child with both masculine and feminine toys, then the child could choose behaviors himself/herself. The child will also be able to choose which gender role he/she adopts if James and Mary provide nongendered experiences to their child early in life. Regardless of what James and Mary do, the child will be able to develop his/her own gender identity, because this is how the child sees its own gender.
