Conflict/critical theories of stratification suggest that social structures promote inequality. These theories are critical of structural/functional theories and ridicule the idea that higher level positions are more important. Conflict theorists also criticize the idea that large differences in pay are necessary to motivate those who want high prestige jobs or jobs that are meaningful to them.
