The Acela Express connects the busy northeast corridor of cities: Research where other high-speed train systems might be used in the United States. In your research, list the cities, the population of each city, the relative distances between the cities, and, if you are able to do so, list the number of air passengers traveling between your selected cities each year.
What will be an ideal response?
In the 1930s, the United States was served by a number of high-speed
rail services. The advent of jet propulsion made air travel faster and more
convenient. The energy effi ciency and the ability to operate in most
weather have made high-speed rail links worth looking at again. In Europe,
Japan, and China, high-speed rail systems are seen as being a worthy
counterpart to the air travel systems, particularly for journeys of fewer
than 500 miles and in countries using very high-speed trains, up to 750
miles. In the United States, the following corridors have been considered:
• Pacifi c Northwest
• California (approved by voters in 2008)
• South Central
• Gulf Coast
• Florida
• Southeast Corridor
• Northeast Corridor (in Service)
• North New England
• Empire
• Keystone
• Chicago Hub
