The first written records of an outbreak of syphilis in Europe occurred in 1494-1495 in Naples, Italy, during a French invasion. Because syphilis was spread by returning French troops, it was initially known as the "French disease." It was only in 1530 that the term "syphilis" was first used by an Italian poet and physician, Girolamo Fracastoro. In his epic poem, his protagonist was a shepherd named Syphilis. Apollo sent this classical disease to him to punish him for defiance. Over the ages the disease has also been known as Lues, Cupid's disease and the Great Pox. Adolf Hitler, Mussolini, Al Capone, Napoleon Bonaparte and Leo Tolstoy are famous historical figures who had syphilis. Syphilis is now known to be caused by a spirochete bacterium, called Treponema pallidum. Transmission occurs during oral, anal or genital sex when there is contact with the syphilitic ulcer.
