Discuss how projected climate change is expected to influence marine ecosystems.
What will be an ideal response?
Climate change is expected to influence marine ecosystems in many ways. For example, rising sea levels from climate change will flood many nesting habitats of sea turtles and change ocean currents, which could disrupt the turtles' migration routes. Rising sea levels may also destroy shallow coral reefs, swamp some low-lying islands, drown many highly productive coastal wetlands, and put many coastal areas underwater. In addition, some nations could lose more than half of their protective coastal mangrove forests. Marine ecosystems are also threatened by ocean acidification, which is occurring due to rising levels of CO2 in the atmosphere.
