Metanarratives, or grand narratives, are paradigmatic systems of knowledge that contain established and credible worldviews and describe a total picture of society; they provide the basis on which truth claims are made and through which the validity of knowledge is judged. Examples of modern metanarratives are Marxism and its socialist variants, the democratic and progressive ideologies of the European Enlightenment, science and the quest for empirical truth, and systems of religious thought like Christianity.
