The experiment described suffers from at least one flaw in design. Identify the flaw and tell how the experiment can be improved.A nutritionist would like to test two different diets for their effects on arthritis. She obtains a random sample of 100 arthritis sufferers. She asks them to choose whether they would like to follow diet A (which is a particular type of vegetarian diet) or diet B (which is a particular type of nonvegetarian diet). After following their chosen diet for a two-month period, each person is asked to assess any changes in their arthritis. The changes for the two groups are compared.
What will be an ideal response?
The participants were not randomly assigned to the two groups so any differences observed between the two groups could be due to variables other than the diet. A portion of those that chose the vegetarian diet were probably already vegetarians. These people are likely to be relatively health conscious and to make healthy lifestyle choices besides diet.
