Discuss what field research has shown about child victims’ memory. Name a specific protocol for interviewing children, and what the main components of the protocol are.

What will be an ideal response?

Field research has shown that children’s statements are typically accurate; however, omissions are common. The cognitive interview, which can be used with both adults and older children, can be used to get extensive and accurate reports. It instructs that adults mentally reconstruct the personal and environmental context of an event, report everything even if it is partial or seemingly unimportant, and recount the event in a variety of orders and perspectives. The child version takes out the child-difficult steps while maintaining core features of the cognitive interview.
