Describe the construction and operation of a vacuum circuit breaker.
What will be an ideal response?
The contacts of a vacuum circuit breaker are contained inside a sealed enclosure. By removing the air inside the enclosure, ionization of air cannot take place and without ionization an arc cannot form. Any arc that may form by a small amount of air that remains inside the enclosure is rapidly extinguished by the separation between the movable and stationary contact. The contacts of a vacuum circuit breaker typically have a clearance of ½ to ¾ inch when open.
