They are necessary for morality in this life and a better rebirth in the next. The precepts are considered not only commands, but also training for life in the dharma (teaching, law). The five precepts are that The Buddhist must not: kill sentient beings, steal, commit sexual immorality, lie, or drink any intoxicants.
