Explain how changes in position of the glottis and larynx during swallowing (deglutition) prevent the aspiration of food into the larynx

What will be an ideal response?

During the pharyngeal phase of swallowing (deglutition), a reflex is initiated by the medulla oblongata in which the larynx is elevated. The bolus of food pushes the epiglottis down. The elevation of the larynx together with the epiglottis protecting the opening to the glottis prevents aspiration of food into the larynx.
