First is impaired control in which a substance may be taken in larger amounts or over a longer period of time than the individual originally intended. Second is social impairment which may include a failure to fulfill an obligation at work, school, or home. Third is risky use which may include use of a substance in a hazardous situation. Fourth is the pharmacological effects which shows over time a development of tolerance of the substance being used.
