What is Maslow’s theory, and why do we still talk about it today?

Maslow developed a hierarchy of needs (physiological, safety, social, esteem, and self-actualization). As implied by the term “hierarchy” these needs must be filled in that order, and only an unfulfilled need will motivate. This theory is still very important for today’s manager in that the manager must know on which level the employee is operating, and provide an extrinsic reward suitable for that level. If you were making minimum wage, and the boss offered you a $200 bonus if you increased your production by 20% it might motivate you. If you were making a six figure income, the offer of the bonus would not address where you are on the hierarchy.
