Describe the tradition of "the well," and describe how an officer should approach the witness stand.
What will be an ideal response?
An officer should never walk in front of the judge between the judge's bench and the attorneys' table. This area is called "the well" and is considered off-limits unless the judge directs you to walk in this area. Traditionally, the area is at least one sword's length from the judge's bench and is off-limits to all persons appearing in the courtroom. No one should enter the well without asking the judge for permission to do so.
