When is a ratchet mechanism used?
What will be an ideal response?
When a mechanism must be designed to turn in only one direction, a ratchet mechanism is used. A ratchet mechanism can be used to prevent an axle from turning in the wrong direction. This is often desired when a load is being lifted, such as when an engine is being removed from a car. Without the ratchet, the engine could crash back into the car if the mechanic's hands slipped on the chain. Many different types of automobile jacks also use a ratchet mechanism to protect the operator.
A ratchet mechanism can also be used to convert linear motion to a rotary motion. In this design, the pawl is used to push against the teeth of the ratchet. The amount of rotary motion is determined by the amount the pawl is moved.
