When a person is arrested, they have the right to an attorney. However, attorneys are very expensive. What happens if the person does not have the money to pay for an attorney?

If a person cannot afford an attorney, the state is required to provide a competent attorney for that person free of charge. This right to counsel continued after the trial into the post trial appeals and any direct appellate appeals processes.
