What steps did Megan take to advocate for her client?
While working as a probation officer for the U.S. District Courts, Megan Romanowski, BSW, was given the task of supervising parolee Robert Sanchez. Robert adjusted well to the community setting—he had a stable job and living situation—and even developed a good working relationship with Megan. But when Robert was involved in another robbery, Megan was forced to make a decision about what to recommend to the judge regarding his sentence.
As required by the Probation Department’s policy, Megan increased her supervision of Robert during the course of the investigation into the crime in which Robert was allegedly involved. Megan was actively involved in meeting with Robert, his boss, and the detective investigating the robbery during the time leading up to actual arrest of her client, Robert Sanchez.
By increasing her involvement with Robert, Megan was making sure she was familiar with everything that was happening in Robert’s case. By staying informed, she was better able to advocate for Robert’s needs and encourage those involved to build on his strengths and capabilities. For example, Glen, Megan’s supervisor, wanted Robert arrested for violating his parole and taken to prison. Megan might have been able, if she decided it was best, to advocate for Robert to be returned to a halfway house rather than go to jail because of his good behavior since his release from prison.
