Discuss some of the ways criminologists test deterrence theory today. Can you envision a study that would also test modern deterrence theory?
What will be an ideal response?
Possible answer: There are four ways that criminologists tests deterrence theory: anecdotal studies (aka, case studies), crime rate analysis, natural/field experiments, and self-report surveys. If you wanted to test deterrence theory in the college/university setting, just think of the ways professors and instructors try to reduce cheating behaviors. In fact, you could run an experiment where you pick a random selection of students in your class and have them take an exam without the professor/instructor present. The other group of students (control) can get a typical exam setting with a professor/instructor there to proctor. What do you think we will find when we compare these two groups in their exam scores? What about if we sneakily have informants in the classroom? How much cheating will they expose in the experiment group versus the control.
