The R-744 system can also serve as a source of heat for the passenger compartment through the use of an integrated heat pump. This will lend itself very useful on electric- or fuel cell-powered vehicles (which have little or no waste heat) as a system for both passenger compartment heating and cooling. In addition, with smaller, more fuel-efficient internal combustion engines, the need for a supplemental heater is also growing, especially in the compact diesel market. This system will enable both heating and cooling simultaneously by regulating refrigerant gas flow through both expansion valves in the system.
