How can a social worker assess the older person for signs of abuse?
What will be an ideal response?
The social worker should do a thorough assessment of the person in his/her residence. Assessment tools like the Brief Abuse Screen for the Elderly can be used, but should not be used without the information of the social worker’s observations and functional assessment. Observations should include awareness of any visible bruises or cuts. The older adult may have explanations for any markings on his/her body that seem inconsistent or unreasonable – or they may provide plausible explanations. It is important to not make assumptions of abuse too quickly. The older person should be interviewed alone, without the caregiver’s present. Sensitivity should be given to the fear the older person may have for retribution by caregivers if abuse is reported.
