Compare and contrast deforestation in the Caribbean islands (such as Haiti) and the Caribbean Rimland. What are the factors that have contributed to greater conservation of forests in the Rimland?

What will be an ideal response?

The legacy of plantation agriculture and the emphasis on clear-cutting has had a profound impact on forests located on Caribbean islands. Sugar cane was an extremely labor intensive crop which further contributed to deforestation to ensure a supply of wood for fuel and housing of the laborers. Haiti has only a small percentage of its forests remaining, while the Rimland retains most of its forests. Low population density in the Rimland contributed to the conservation of forests. More recently, tourism has provided an incentive for conservation of the remaining resources.
