Describe the sequence of problems associated with tropical rainforest destruction.

What will be an ideal response?

Settlement in the rainforests is usually encouraged and financially subsidized by the government. The usual sequence of events involves the governmental construction of a highway into the forest to provide a way to reach the interior of the forest. Small settlements, also subsidized by the government, arise along the highways and roads branch off the main highway to penetrate deeper and deeper into the forest. Trees are cut and burned in patches, to make way for the grazing of cattle. However, tropical soils contain limited nutrients, so these fields yield grass for grazing for a limited period of time, usually around three years. Once the land is degraded and no good for grazing, the farmers move on to the next patch. The process begins again. In this way the forest is fragmented and the ecosystem is destroyed.
