B
Marasmus, or protein-calorie malnutrition, is a severe nutritional disorder in which there is an inadequate intake of protein and calories or prolonged starvation. There is decrease in skeletal muscle, subcutaneous fat, and weight. This disorder can occur from poor absorption of proteins, such as with burns, anorexia nervosa, tuberculosis, cancer, AIDS, and malabsorption diseases. Patients with marasmus have symptoms similar to kwashiorkor except that they appear more emaciated and do not have edema.
