The examples used will vary. In the least, students should include a variation of the definition of each concept, focusing on the key parts. For example: While chivalry is more complex than it seems, it is much like preferential treatment. In general, it refers to the behaviors and attitudes of men toward women, but it is more. Social class and race/ethnicity are intertwined with sex/gender, which may increase the level of chivalry experienced. Chivalry, as well as paternalism, refer to the belief that some in society need protection due to their weak status. Patriarchy states that the nature of women is biological, so it takes the idea of chivalry to a higher level. Thus, it too implies that women are generally dependent upon men not only at the biological level, but in the social, political, and legal environments.
