Advances in children's brain functioning during the school years influence school performance. Define and discuss the roles of selective attention and automatization in acquiring academic skills

What will be an ideal response?

Selective attention is the ability to focus on one thing while ignoring other things in
the environment. This ability helps children listen and block out distractions and
therefore retain more information. Automatization is the repetition of sequences of
thoughts and actions to the point at which they become routine. Neural processing
becomes more efficient as children need to think less when engaging in routine
tasks to free their brains to acquire more complex skills.
