The most severe form of homophobia can lead to hate crimes where people inflict violence on gay men and lesbian women or other minorities. It is tempting to think that hate crimes are rare but sadly they are all too common. Hate crimes are not uniformly distributed across the United States, either. In more rural or conservative areas, their very real threat keeps LGBTQ people hidden for fear they will be harassed, assaulted, raped, or even murdered.
