What are the four personal attributes necessary for strengths-based practice?
What will be an ideal response?
Ans: First, we need to develop a level of self-awareness that allows us to understand how social contexts and narratives shape our encounters with clients, and how our own belief systems interact with our professional roles in ways that either promote or reduce issues related to oppression, social justice, freedom, and respect among other values. Second, we will want to commit ourselves to exploring the consequences of what we are doing and its impact or lack of impact on client systems based on the application of critical thinking skills. Third, self-reflection is necessary in order to focus on the connection between our own beliefs about what “should” be, and how those beliefs shape our work, with specific attention related to social justice, autonomy, service, respect for human dignity, and diversity. Fourth, we need courage to analyze our own actions, within the systems that employ us, when those systems negatively affect our clients’ lives.
