Discuss the psychological health issues and moral issues regarding abortion
What will be an ideal response?
The student should indicate that while couples who lose planned babies through spontaneous abortion may become distraught and grieve, women who terminate unwanted pregnancies do not experience negative psychological responses as long as the idea of abortion does not violate their deeply held beliefs and if it does not have a perceived social stigma. Emotional distress is usually greater before an abortion than after. The American Psychological Association has stated that there is "no credible evidence" that a single, elective abortion causes mental-health problems in adult women. Furthermore, children who are born to women whose abortion requests were denied are more likely to have problems than wanted offspring are. Moral issues involve the American controversy over abortion. More states have found new ways to restrict abortion. From a public health standpoint, when abortions are illegal, maternal deaths increase because of botched illegal abortions. People of different religious beliefs have different attitudes toward abortion regarding when a fetus is considered a person, what circumstances justify abortion, and who decides these circumstances.
