Compare and contrast emotion-focused and problem-focused coping. Briefly describe your responses to two stressors this past year, classifying your responses as one of the coping types mentioned above.

What will be an ideal response?

With problem-focused coping, you try to reduce stress by actively working to fix the problem. For example, a student who falls behind in a class may begin meeting with a tutor to get assistance in getting caught up. Or perhaps you have problems with your car hesitating when the engine is running, so you add some fuel injector cleaner to see if it will help. If it does not, you try a few more solutions and perhaps end up taking it to a mechanic. In emotion-focused coping, you focus your attention on managing your feelings over the stressor. This might involve engaging in a stress-reducing activity like taking a hot bath, meditating, or exercising.
