Describe one type of assessment for functional competence
What will be an ideal response?
Two types of formal measures that provide information about functional competence include adaptive behavior instruments and life/functional skills instruments. Adaptive behavior measures provide information on the following areas: self-care/daily living skills, home living skills, social behavior, communication skills, leisure skills, community use skills, health/safety skills, functional academic skills, self-direction, and work-related skills.
Life skills instruments assess whether the person has the knowledge or can perform a particular skill or set of skills related to a functional area. Life skill measures involve the student in some observable activity—answering questions (knowledge-related) or performing activities (skill-related).
Two of the most popular informal techniques are checklists and rating scales. One of the most useful techniques for assessing functional competence is performance assessment. Performance assessment measures how a student applies knowledge. In this type of assessment, the individual must produce or perform a response.
