Compare and contrast the structure, physical characteristics, and biological functions of two of the following: fats,
steroids, and phospholipids. What will be an ideal response?
ANSWER: In general, all three molecules consist of a carbon skeleton. Fats and steroids are nonpolar
whereas phospholipids are amphipathic. Fats generally function as storage forms of energy
and consist of three fatty acids attached to glycerol. Steroids consist of four attached rings and have many functions, including hormones and components of membranes. Phospholipids
consist of two fatty acids and one phosphate group attached to glycerol; they are the principal
components of membranes.
