Compare Horney’s concept of submissiveness to combat basic anxiety with Fromm’s concept of submitting to another to fulfill the relatedness need. Apply both of these concepts to Marla’s relationship with her mother.
What will be an ideal response?
The two concepts are quite similar. According to Horney’s theory, neurotics sometimes submit to another person in order to gain affection from them. According to Fromm’s theory, people use submission to another in order to form an (artificial) union with another. Either concept can be used to explain Marla’s relationship with her mother in that Marla submits to her mother in order to maintain her close relationship with her.
