Three basic kinds of drugs are used for labor: analgesics, anesthesia, and oxytocics. Analgesics are used to relieve pain. Anesthesia is used in late first-stage labor and during expulsion of the baby to block sensation in an area of the body or to block consciousness. Oxytocin is a synthetic hormone that is used to stimulate contractions.
