Explain in detail what a gradient is.
What will be an ideal response?
A gradient, or gradient fill, is a graphic effect consisting of a smooth blend, change, or transition from one color to another. Although there is potential for overuse with gradients, subtle gradients add depth and texture to a graphic or Web page. Shade-to-shade gradients sometimes seem elegant and emotive. They can emulate how light strikes real-world surfaces. Vertical gradients help the eyes to move further down the page. Graphic artists usually save bright, multi-striped gradients for smaller portions of a page such as a heading, or when they intentionally want to overwhelm the viewer.
Typically used as a graduated blend between two colors, the direction of a gradient transition can be top to bottom, bottom to top, side to side, or a variety of other shapes and diagonals. You can apply gradients to the entire image or a selected portion of an image. Photoshop offers many preset gradient fills, or you can create your own using the Gradient Tool. Gradients work best with RGB or CMYK colors. The Gradient tool cannot be used with the Bitmap or Index color modes.
