Describe the flow of information along the perforant pathway, the mossy fiber pathway, and the Schaffer collateral pathway. Use the numbers on the structures in this diagram as references in your explanation.
What will be an ideal response?
The pathways connecting the hippocampus to the rest of the brain, as well as the connections formed within the hippocampus itself, are central to functions of this structure. Input from the rhinal cortex travels along the perforant pathway (8), whose axons form synapses on the cells of the dentate gyrus. Axons from the dentate gyrus, also known as mossy fibers (5), synapse on cells found in CA3 (1). Axons from CA3 form two branches. One branch, the Schaffer collateral pathway, synapses with cells in CA1 (3). The other branch exits the hippocampus as the fornix (4).
