In 1980, Congress passed the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act, commonly known as the Superfund. The basic purpose is to regulate the cleanup of disposal sites in which hazardous waste is leaking into the environment. A special federal fund, known as the Superfund, was created for that purpose.The parties that are responsible for the cleanup of hazardous waste sites include:•The person who generated the wastes disposed of at the site•The person who transported the wastes to the site•The person who owned or operated the site at the time of the disposal•The current owner or operator?These parties are known as potentially responsible parties (PRPs).
