Describe diabetes mellitus
What will be an ideal response?
Diabetes mellitus is the most common hormonal disorder. Untreated, the person's blood sugar drops dramatically, as sugar is excreted in the urine. Treatment involves administration of insulin, which causes cells of the body to store sugar. The cause of diabetes is either a lack of insulin (Type I diabetes mellitus), or an inability to respond to insulin (Type II diabetes mellitus). Insulin is produced by specialized cells of the pancreas, known as the islets of Langerhans. The islet cells also produce glucagon (but not by the same cells as those that produce insulin).

Your friend read an article on the internet today about a new single-celled organism that has been discovered by scientists in Africa. She said the organism is the size of a mouse, and lives in freshwater streams. You tell her to check the source because you think she has read a hoax. How do you know?
1.Because an organism of that size would have been discovered years before now. 2.Single-celled organisms can’t survive in fresh water. 3.A single-celled organism could not attain that size. They are limited by surface-to-volume ratio. 4.There would have to be many more than one, since cells must come from other cells. If they only collected one, it must be a hoax.
