• There are several types of workplace discrimination. Overt discrimination can lead to violence toward LGBT individuals. Hidden discrimination involves the hiring, promotion, and compensation process of a job.
• This type of discrimination brings the message that an individual is not wanted in an organization. Overt and hidden discrimination in a work environment discourages sexual minorities from making their sexual orientation known. Other forms of discrimination are blackmail, ostracism, sexual harassment, exclusion or avoidance, termination and lavender ceiling.
• Counselors can prove to be affective in assisting sexual minorities dealing with discrimination in the workplace.
• Counselors can provide a list of company-based sexual minority employee groups that can provide information about specific organizations.
