Self-correcting manipulatives have one solution, so it is obvious to the learner when he or she has completed them correctly. Open-ended manipulatives have many solutions and can be used creatively, sometimes with no real obviously correct way to use them. They are good for creative, cooperative activities. I would use self-correcting manipulatives to build self-confidence and independence in my student, because the student can see when the solution is correct, and needs no help or feedback from others. This can create independence and self-confidence.
