Discuss the role of slavery in the Middle ages.
What will be an ideal response?
Answers will vary, but students should reflect an understanding that Christian merchants supplied Muslim traders with slaves, and had done so since the Carolingian period. When long-distance trade intensified over the eleventh and twelfth centuries, so did the slave trade, both among Muslim countries and at home. At certain times, Slavs constituted the majority of captives sold into slavery, but never for long. The old Viking trade in slaves along the Volga River continued well into the tenth century; the young women who constituted the majority of slaves sold to Christians in Italian and Spanish markets worked as domestic servants, unskilled laborers in crafts and trades, and sexual servants of their masters. During the economic expansion of the 1200s, the number of slaves increased and the demand for them rose, especially in Italy and Spain.
