What form(s) of abuse does this describe?

What will be an ideal response?

Answer: This situation is not as easy as it sounds. If Mary lives alone, she may be unable to care for herself. In that case it may be a form of self-neglect. If there are individuals who Joanne thinks are watching over Mary, or if she lives with someone, then this could be a situation of abuse and/or neglect by a spouse or other family member. It might also be that food and or medications are being withheld from her. There is also the possibility that the caretaker does not realize what is happening to Mary or unable to meet her needs. In any case, Mary may be over-or under-medicated or suffering from dementia and/or malnutrition. It would be important to call the local adult protective services so that Mary could be evaluated and examined.

This might be a good time to speak with students about the positive aspect of making such a report of suspected elder abuse or neglect. Adult protective services might be able to set up meal delivery, arrange for a home-health aide, and assure that proper medications are being taken. All these services can assist in stabilizing an otherwise vulnerable elder.
