Discuss the importance of verbal communication with a client, and understanding their needs up front.
What will be an ideal response?
Before you begin working on a digital composition for a client, you must ensure that you fully understand what the client is looking for. To do so, you need to set up strong and reliable lines of communication, which will involve you not only offering your advice and expertise, but also listening to what the client is really saying. Helping your client clearly communicate his or her needs to you is essential before you dive into any project. For example, if your client asks you to create an ad for a magazine, that information should be just a starting point. You need to ask clarifying questions, such as: Is the ad aimed at a certain demographic or group? Is the magazine a conservative business magazine, an interior decorating magazine, or is it for teens—with an emphasis on pop culture? Are you trying to convey a certain mood? Should the text be in a particular font or color? Listen carefully, and give your client time to fully explain their vision for the ad. Even after your client has provided more details, it’s a good idea to make sure you really understood what you were told. It can be helpful to use phrases such as “What I understood is” or “Let me see if I heard you correctly” to be sure you really know what’s required.
By asking clarifying questions and restating your understanding of the client’s needs, you can iron out many potential wrinkles ahead of time. That will save you time and effort in the short term, and in the long run, it will result in a happy client who will be more likely to request your services again—and recommend you to others.
