Before you begin working on a digital composition for a client, you must ensure that you fully understand what the client is looking for. Helping your client clearly communicate his or her needs to you is essential before you dive into any project. For example, if your client asks you to create an ad for a magazine, that information should be just a starting point. You need to ask clarifying questions, such as: Is the ad aimed at a certain demographic or group? Is the magazine a conservative business magazine, an interior decorating magazine, or is it for teens—with an emphasis on pop culture? Are you trying to convey a certain mood? Should the text be in a particular font or color? Listen carefully, and give your client time to fully explain their vision for the ad. Even after your client has provided more details, it’s a good idea to make sure you really understood what you were told.
